Russia - La betulla

Un re aveva due figli Timur e Yuri che essendo della stessa età e dovendo decidere a chi lasciare il suo regno penso’ di sottoporli ad una prova, chi l’avesse superata sarebbe stato il suo successore.
Nel profondo di una grande foresta viveva un drago che seminava terrore e distruzione ovunque passasse tra il suo popolo e nessuno riusciva ad avvicinarlo per ucciderlo.
Chiamò Timur e Yuri dicendo loro: “chi mi porta la testa del drago, diventerà re al mio posto – chiedetemi ciò che vi serve per il viaggio e partite”;
Timur chiese oltre alle armi 7 asini carichi di oro, Yuri chiese oltre alle armi 7 asini carichi di vernice bianca.
I due fratelli quindi si inoltrarono nella grande foresta nera per strade diverse alla ricerca del drago Megas.
Naturalmente tutto il popolo fu informato della prova per la successione al trono. Ora, mentre ritennero Yuri pazzerello e di poco senno, Timur fu ritenuto assai più sveglio e abile.
Essi camminarono per giorni e giorni nel folto della foresta. Ora Yuri, ogni tanto dipingeva di vernice bianca un albero, il più sottile che incontrava sul suo cammino, per risparmiar vernice, mentre Timur avanzava tra i folti e scuri alberi, distribuendo un po’ di oro in cambio di notizie sul drago Megas, non sapendo che già Megas si era messo sulle tracce di entrambi per ucciderli ed avere lui il regno!
Megas poi essendo pure lui, nero come la foresta era difficilissimo da vedere se non quando era già troppo tardi e ti era addosso.
Ora avvenne che Timur con il suo oro riuscì per primo ad avvicinarsi a Megas ma non vedendolo ne fu sopraffatto e morì. Mentre Yuri oltre a segnare i sottili alberi riempiva piccole pozze con vernice bianca, così che Megas, girandogli attorno, lasciava anche tracce che Yuri studiava attentamente ed al momento giusto, Yuri sorprese Megas e gli piantò nel cuore tutta la lancia!
Il ritorno al castello non fu difficile avendo segnato di bianco gli alberi più sottili; riuscì così a tornare da suo padre portandogli la testa del drago Megas ed essere incoronato re!
Volendo però Yuri che anche il suo popolo potesse andare nel bosco a fare legna e cacciare, senza perdersi, fece dipingere più alberi che potè di bianco, per tracciare la via.
Col tempo e tempo questi sottili alberi chiari si riprodussero da soli e nacquero luminosi boschi di bianche betulle!

Russia - Birches

Once upon a time there was a king who had two sons, Timur and Yuri. They were the same age. Since he had to decide who to leave his kingdom to he thought of giving them a trial. The winner would be his heir.
In the depths of one of his forests there lived a dragon who spread terror and destruction among the people wherever it went and nobody could approach it to kill it.
He called Timur and Yuri and told them: "He who will bring me the dragon's head will be king in my place. Ask me for what you need for the journey and be off".
Besides weapons Timur asked for seven donkeys carrying gold, while in addition to weapons Yuri asked for seven donkeys carrying white paint.
So the two brothers walked into the big black forest along different paths in search of the dragon Megas.
All the people knew of the trial to succeed to the throne of course. Well, while they thought Yuri a bit nuts and and a bit silly, Timur was regarded as much smarter and cleverer.
They walked for days and days in the thick of the forest. From time to time Yuri painted a tree with the white paint, the thinnest tree he came across, to save paint, while Timur proceeded amongst the dark thick forest giving out some of the gold in exchange for information on the dragon Megas. They both did not know that Megas was already following them to kill them and get the the kingdom for himself.
Since Megas was as black as the forest, it was very hard to see it except when it was too late because it was already upon you.
So it happened that with his gold Timur managed to approach Megas first but since he could not see it, it overcame him and he died. While Yuri, in addition to marking the thin trees, made little pools of white paint so that Megas, while coming nearer and nearer to catch him, left footprints which Yury was carefully studying so that at the right time he caught on Megas and drove his whole spear through its heart.
It was easy to go back to the castle. Having left the white marks, he was able to get back to his father bringing him the dragon Megas' head and to be crowned king.
However, since Yuri wanted his people to be able to walk into the wood to collect timber and hunt without getting lost either, he had as many trees as he could painted white to mark the way.
With the passing of time, from the white thin trees other white thin trees grew, forming shiny woods of white birches.
